iOS 13: beta, release date and feature list

Australia's best cheap headphones, discounts and deals in July 2019

With headphones of all types, colours and styles flooding the market, it’s hard knowing which ones to pick – do you go for the premium model you’ve always wanted, or are you better off just grabbing a cheap set from the discount bin?

Well, it’s worth remembering that cheap headphones are cheap for a reason, so even if saving money is priority we can’t recommend those $2 discount-bin variety that you find all over the world. And, as you’ll find out below, you don’t always have spend a lot of dosh to snag a great set of headphones either.

To save you the time and effort, we’ve put together this dedicated guide to the best bargains on great-sounding headphone. We constantly monitor major Aussie retailers and go a-huntin’ to bring you the most worthwhile deals on a variety of sets – from in-ear buds to noise-cancelling cans to Sony headphones – so check out our continually updated list below to discover the best current headphones deals in Australia.

Best cheap over-ear headphones this week

Best cheap in-ear headphones this week

The best deals on our favourite headphones

To help you decide which headphones work best for you, we've decided to put together a little buying guide with a list of our favourite recommendations.

The headphones you'll find here have tons of features to help you to get the most out of your music, or any other form of audio-visual entertainment you prefer, however you like to listen to it.

For the most part, when shopping for noise cancellation headphones we've gotten used to making a compromise between shutting the world out and wanting great sound performance. But no longer. Sony's WH-1000XM2 cans are a great redesign of the already-excellent MDR-1000X and offer not just perfect noise cancellation but also score top marks in sound quality. These headphones easily outclass Bose's flagship QC35 II in terms of both soundscape and feature set.

Read more: Sony WH-1000XM2 review

The very popular and excellent Bose QC35s underwent an upgrade and now come with Google Assistant at your beck and call. For a premium price, not only do you get Bose's world class noise cancellation and good sound quality, you also get a personal butler and an incredibly comfortable set of cans. And with up to 40 hours of battery life, you'll get through any long-haul flight.

Read more: Bose QuietComfort 35 II review

For a little over $100, it's hard to recommend a better sounding pair of 'buds than the 1More Triple Driver in-ears. It's hard to fault the headphones, if you can put up with the rubber cable and the plastic remote. Even that is just us nitpicking. For the price, it's our top recommendation of in-ear headphones if your phone still has a headphone jack or you don't mind using an adaptor.

Read more: 1More Triple Driver in-ear headphones review

If you're a frequent flyer, or commute long distances daily, you'll understand the need for a great pair of noise cancelling headphones. Unfortunately, most of them cost a pretty penny. But not the Plantronics BackBeat Pro 2. These headphones offer not just good sound and shut the world out, but do it at pretty much half the cost of the usual suspects of Sony, Bose and Beats. They also have a useful feature that turns the headphones off when you're not wearing them, saving battery. And did we mention you can pair two devices at once as well? If that isn't great value, then we don't know what else is.

Read more: Plantronics BackBeat Pro 2 review

With headphone jacks fast disappearing from flagship handsets, wireless headphones is the way to go. But not everyone likes the feel of a set of cans on their head and cables, no matter how small, can get annoying. If that's describing you, then true wireless 'buds are the answer to your prayers. While most of them compromise on sound quality, the Jabra Elite 65t not only sound good but offer ambient noise isolation as well. They're an excellent substitute if you aren't too keen on the other-worldly look of Apple's AirPods.

Read more: Jabra Elite 65t review

It's hard to find the Optoma NuForce BE Sport4 wireless 'buds, but if you're after a set of no-frills headphones that don't compromise on sound quality, you'll want to look for these. They do an excellent job of isolating sound when in a noisy environment and boast up to 10 hours of battery. And with a 15-minute quick charge, you'll get an additional two hours of playback out of them.

Aussies can get Audible and Kindle Unlimited free for three months

Amazon Prime Day isn’t too far away and, in the lead up to the big sale, the e-commerce giant is offering Australian Prime members a chance to experience some of its other services for free.

If you are an existing Prime member but have never tried Audible or Kindle Unlimited before, you can sign up for either one or both services between July 1 and July 31 and you can enjoy a three-month long free trial period for each service.

Now, presumably this means that those who haven't trialled Amazon Prime before can sign up for a free 30-day trial (making use of it during Amazon Prime Day while you're at it), and then sign up for both the Audible and Kindle Unlimited offers as well.

So many stories…

Audible and Kindle Unlimited are for booklovers. If you love to read, then Kindle Unlimited will give you access to over a million ebooks. If any of those ebooks have an audio version available on Audible, you’ll even be able to listen to the narration if you don’t have the time to read. To use Kindle Unlimited, you will need the Kindle app on your handheld device or get yourself an Amazon Kindle e-reader.

For booklovers who are constantly on the move, Audible is a great option. It’s the largest library of audiobooks and members can choose one audiobook each month regardless of price. Purchasing additional audiobooks won’t cost more than $14.95 each, and you can swap them out any time.

If you aren’t a Prime member already, now is the perfect time for you to sign up and take advantage of not just the three-month free trial of Audible and Kindle Unlimited, but also save a packet on a variety of goods during this year’s Prime Day.

To sign up for any of the services, just click on the green button.

England vs India live stream: how to watch today's Cricket World Cup 2019 from anywhere

With Pakistan having piled the pressure on with their win on Saturday against Afghanistan, and a ruthless India eyeing pole position in the table, England taking their place in the 2019 Cricket World Cup semi-final now looks seriously in doubt. You'll be able to watch all the action from this crucial clash no matter where you are in the world by using our England vs India live stream guide below.

The brief is s a simple one for Eoin Morgan's men, who entered the tournament as favourites - nothing less than a win today will do.

Having lost their last two games on the spin, England's confidence looks shot, with thier batting order looking particularly jittery.

They can at least take encouragement from the fact that they beat their opponents today 2-1 in their last bilateral series at home. However, with a large contingent of India fans expected in the stands to cheer on their side and pile as much pressure on the hosts as possible, there's never been a better time for this England side to show they can hold their nerve.

While question marks remain about India's middle-order batting, the table doesn't lie - they've been superb and now very much look like the team to beat in the tournament. With a win ensuring a spot in the semis, expect not a slither of mercy to be shown to the hosts today from the Men In Blue.

You’ll be able to watch all the action from this with ease from anywhere in the world if you follow our England vs India live stream guide below - somehow, it's free to watch in some places, but not in either of the competing countries.

Watch a Cricket World Cup 2019 live stream from outside your country

If you're in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, US or India and looking to find out how to watch the match, we've got all the details about the broadcaster in your region below.

If you're away from home country and looking to tune in you'll likely to find you won't be able to thanks to geo-blocking. Thankfully there's a way to alleviate that frustration. By using a VPN you'll be able to watch the game safely without having to take a chance on an illegal feed from a website that's likely infested with malware.

Italy vs Netherlands live stream: how to watch today's Women's World Cup 2019 match from anywhere

With the Italy and Holland looking fairly well-matched, its looking like we're in store for another tightly-contested 2019 Women's World Cup quarter-final. And it's one you'll be able to watch from anywhere around the world with our Italy vs Netherlands live stream guide below.

Both teams playing in today's quarter-final will already feel some sense achievement having got this far. For Sweden it marks the first time they've reached the last 8 in their history, for Italy it ends a twenty-year absence from the tournament.

With a draw that has managed to keep them away from big guns like the USA, Germany and England in the early knockout stages, both teams may feel they could go on and make an even more meaningful piece of footballing history.

It's somewhat surprising to find that this is only the Netherlands second ever appearance in the Women's World Cup. Despite this, they went into this year's tournament in France as one of the more fancied teams, largely thanks to them being the current UEFA European Champions. They've largely lived up to their billing, however they were less than assured at the back in their last match against Japan.

Italy have also been conspicuous by their absence at the Women's World Cup, with this their first appearance in the tournament in 20 years. With the likes of clinical striker Cristiana Girelli within their ranks, Italy will likely be less wasteful in front of goal than Japan and will fancy their chances after watching their opponents last match.

Don't miss any of today's action by following the instructions below and grabbing a live stream of Italy vs Netherlands wherever you are in the world.

Australia vs New Zealand live stream: how to watch today's Cricket World Cup 2019 from anywhere

With 12 points from 7 matches, Australia appear to be peaking at the right time and go into today's match as strong favourites. However, if the Kiwis rekindle the sparkling form they showed at the start of the tournament, we could see the Aussies' unbeaten record come under threat. You'll be able to watch all the action from their clash no matter where you are in the world by using our Australia vs New Zealand live stream guide below.

Both teams may be comfortably placed with Australia already in the semis and New Zealand just a point away from joining them there, but don't expect either side to kick back today in what should be an intriguing battle of the two neighbouring rivals.

History isn't on New Zealand's side - they've only won one out of seven World Cup matches between the two nations.

Google isn't planning a beta test for its Stadia gaming service

The November launch for Google Stadia is approaching fast, and you can already pre-order access to the cloud gaming service – but you won't be able to sign up for a beta test, because there isn't going to be one.

Speaking to GamesRadar+, Google's vice president and head of Stadia Phil Harrison ruled out the possibility of launching a beta version of the service, beyond the Project Stream tests that have already happened.

"We are not going to do another test in the UK or Europe," says Harrison. "If we had time we probably would have done so, but we don't need to."

In other words, you won't be able to try before you buy – you'll just have to trust that Stadia is going to work on your internet connection and hardware when you stump up the cash. There is at least a free tier to take advantage of, after the initial purchase of the controller and Chromecast.

More Stadia tidbits

The GamesRadar+ reveal comes from the latest in a series of interviews that Harrison is doing with the gaming press. Yesterday we heard how games on Stadia are likely to cost the same as they do on a console.

For a $10/£9 monthly fee, you're going to be able to get access to a selection of games as part of your subscription, and in 4K as well – but certain top-tier titles are going to cost you extra. The free version, with lower resolutions, launches next year.

The only way to get into Google Stadia at the moment is to pre-order the Founder's Edition for $129/£119 direct from Google. As yet there don't appear to be any plans to launch the gaming service in Australia.

In a separate interview, Harrison says he expects broadband data caps in the US to increase or disappear altogether so that Stadia gamers can stream interrupted. He also confirmed if games were pulled from the Stadia library, they'd still be available to those who had purchased them.

Samsung Galaxy A90 could lack a key Galaxy A80 feature

With rumors of high-end specs and optional 5G, the Samsung Galaxy A90 is shaping up to be quite impressive, but one thing it might lack is the pop-up, rotating camera from the Samsung Galaxy A80.

That’s according to @OnLeaks (a reputable leaker) who tweeted that according to his sources, no pop-up or slider camera is expected.

Given that the Samsung Galaxy A90 is set to be a higher-end and likely more expensive model in the same range as the Samsung Galaxy A80, that’s slightly disappointing, as the camera is one of that phone’s key features.

However, it’s not necessarily a bad thing, as pop-up cameras also come with durability concerns, so that’s one less thing buyers of the Galaxy A90 will need to worry about if this is true.

As with any rumor we’d take this with a pinch of salt, but it is believable, as there haven’t been any real rumors suggesting the A90 would have a pop-up camera, just speculation based on the feature being present on the A80.

Plus, given that Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S10 range doesn’t have a pop-up camera, and that it doesn’t look like the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 will either, this isn’t necessarily even seen as a flagship feature by the company.

We should know all the details about the Samsung Galaxy A90 soon, as while no specific release date has yet been rumored, the number of leaks surrounding the specs and features of the phone suggest we’ll get an official look at it soon.

Chromium-based Edge gets tracking prevention for better online privacy

Chromium-based Edge has now got tracking prevention functionality, so those testing Microsoft’s revamped browser can give it a whirl.

Tracking prevention is now available to Edge testers on the Canary channel, meaning the earliest preview version of the browser, specifically build 77.0.203.0 which was released yesterday.

So what does it do? As the name suggests, it means that your progress around the web can’t be monitored or tracked, and more specifically, that you aren’t tracked by websites or services you aren’t actively visiting.

This happens more often than you might think when surfing the web, and third-party trackers can build up a considerably detailed picture of your preferences going by which websites you visit.

Microsoft explains: “Whenever a website is visited, trackers from other sites may save information in the browser using cookies and other storage mechanisms. This information may include the sites you’ve visited and the content you’re interested in, building a digital profile which can be accessed by organizations to offer personalized content when visiting other sites.”

The argument that the ad-peddling firms will push on the flipside is that without tracking, you will still see ads (unless you’re blocking them), just less relevant ones. There can also be issues whereby if you enable a strict level of tracker blocking, this may cause problems with some websites.

At any rate, Chromium-based Edge offers three different levels of tracking protection. Basic protection blocks any malicious trackers, but lets any others through, so your web adverts will still be personalized (and your preferences monitored, of course).

The recommended setting is 'Balanced' which blocks malicious material, and also some third-party trackers. Turn on Strict protection and almost all third-party trackers will be blocked, but as noted, this has the potential to interfere with and possibly break some websites.

Enabling tracking prevention

As tracking prevention is in such an early stage of testing, you’ll have to manually enable it. To do so, in the browser’s URL bar, enter the following:

edge://flags/#edge-tracking-prevention

This opens a settings page, where you can select to enable tracking prevention in the drop-down menu. After that, click ‘Relaunch Now’ to close and reopen the browser, in order to register your change in preferences.

Tracking prevention will now be on, and you can choose your preferred level in Edge’s privacy settings (edge://settings/privacy).

Note that Mac users haven’t got this feature yet, due to an unspecified issue, although Microsoft assures us that tracking prevention will be available for macOS via the next build that arrives from the Canary channel.

For more details on how tracking prevention works in Chromium-based Edge, check out Microsoft’s blog post here.

YouTube Music app will soon let you automatically download up to 500 songs

Google has given YouTube Music's Offline Mixtape feature a huge overhaul, enabling it to download up to 500 tracks for offline listening rather than the current 100.

The new feature is called Smart Downloads, according to Android Central, and will automatically download tracks based on your listening habits.

Although YouTube Music is chiefly a music streaming service, Smart Downloads lets you save a bundle of tracks to your phone over your home Wi-Fi, so the app won't eat into your mobile data allowance while you're out and about. It's also very handy if you're going to be offline for a while (on a long flight, for example).

Don't worry if you haven't got enough space on your phone for a vast music library, though – 500 is the maximum possible number of tracks to download, but you can set a lower limit if you prefer.

Time (and data) is money

YouTube Music will download tracks using an algorithm, which factors in your existing 100-track Offline Mixtape, your list of 'liked' tracks, and your favorite playlists and albums.

You can still choose to download tracks individually if you prefer, but when Smart Downloads rolls out, it could save you an enormous amount of time and data. That sounds good to us.

Twitch is giving away free Apex Legends loot for Amazon Prime Day

Needed more of an incentive to get an Amazon Prime subscription? The retail giant is set to unleash a horde of deals in the coming weeks in the run to – and certainly during – this year's Amazon Prime Day sales. But on the gaming side, it seems some of those goods are going to be given away for free.

Amazon has announced that Twitch Prime users – those who have subscribed to Amazon Prime and connected it to their Twitch account – will be eligible for a number of free goodies for EA titles.

As of July 3, players of the battle royale game Apex Legends will get an "exclusive Legend skin and weapon skin", with more skins and content available throughout July and August – and unspecified gifts through "multiple EA Sports titles".

It seems like most, if not all of it will be cosmetic items, rather than anything that gives an unfair advantage on the battlefield, and we're yet to see the designs – though part of us wants something as delightfully naff as a corporate Amazon Prime logo. Either way, it should provide some alternative looks for those wanting to stand out from the pack.

Amazon will be going big on celebrations on July 13 with an eight-hour live-stream on Twitch Prime, kicking off at 6pm BST / 1pm EST / 10am PT, with the likes of gold-medallist Mo Farah and footballer Thierry Henry competing on the virtual playing field.

With a concert headlined by Dua Lipa and Taylor Swift a few days before, it's clear Amazon is looking to make this year's Prime Day as big an event as it can.

You, me, and Prime

The Twitch.tv streaming site is a hugely popular hub for watching and sharing game playthroughs or competitive play, with a number of perks when upgrading your account with an Amazon Prime subscription.

Alongside the addition of faster delivery (not necessarily one-day) and Prime member-exclusive deals, you also get access to the Amazon Prime Music and Amazon Prime Video services, as well as free monthly games through the Twitch.tv platform.

A number of new skins might not excite everyone, but we recommend keeping an eye out for deals or giveaways that do take your fancy. With Amazon dealing in everything from music and films to smart speakers and e-books, there'll likely be something for you when Amazon Prime Day hits on July 15-16.

Fantastic fibre freebie: BT Broadband deals now come with a free £100 M&S voucher

For the next week, BT is trying to persuade you to sign up for its fibre broadband deals by offering up some very attractive freebies. The telecommunications giant is already the most popular internet provider in the country, and a promotion this good will no doubt add even more to its market share.

So what do these new broadband deals look like? Full details of the included packages are below, but we really like the look of its Superfast Fibre 1 plan, with which you'll be rewarded with both a £100 M&S voucher and a £40 pre-paid credit card.

The voucher can be used in Marks and Spencer stores nationwide after you've claimed it here within three months of your internet installation.

Upgrade to BT's Superfast Fibre 2 package for an extra £8 per month and that pre-paid Mastercard magically increases to £70 instead. You still get the £100 M&S voucher too, and BT's fastest widely available fibre speeds.

Whichever deal you end up getting, BT is so stocked up on incentives that these are easily some of the best value fibre broadband deals around. You can see the best of these offers below or for something a bit different, check out our guide to the best broadband deals around, no matter the provider.

BT's latest fibre broadband deals - end July 4

What is a BT Reward Card?

The Reward Card that BT sends out is a pre-paid credit card that you can use anywhere that accepts Mastercard. In short, that's around a million shops, cafes and restaurants around the world, so you shouldn't find it difficult to find places to spend, spend, spend.

It's an old-fashioned chip and pin card, rather than contactless. But do make sure that you claim your Reward Card within three months of installation, otherwise you'll lose out on all that cash.

Google Stadia games will cost the same as full price console titles (even if they're only streamed)

The fact that Google Stadia, the game streaming service from the search giant, will work over your internet connection and not require a traditional console, has lead some to speculate that the price of its games may be notable cheaper than those you'd buy for other platforms.

After all, to get the high-res, 4K versions of the games, you're going to already need to be paying out for a pricey internet connection, and a premium subscription to the Google Stadia service itself. The fact that the most sought-after releases will cost an additional fee may irk some. [A free version of Stadia will run from 2020, but will limit players to 1080p resolution, and wont offer the 'comes-with-the-subscription' library of games that the "Pro" edition offers.]

But in response to a question from Eurogamer, querying if Stadia's paid-for games would be any cheaper as a result of the above factors, Stadia chief Phil Harrison replied "I don't know why it would be cheaper."

Anytime, anywhere

For Harrison, it seems, the benefit of paying full price for a Stadia version of a game as opposed to on any other platform is the accessibility it offers.

"The value you get from the game on Stadia means you can play it on any screen in your life - TV, PC, laptop, tablet, phone," he said. "I think that is going to be valuable to players.

"In theory, the Stadia version of a game is going to be at the highest-possible quality of innovation and sophistication on the game engine side."

It's a time of great change for the industry, Harrison indicates, and player spending habits are shifting in a post-Netflix world. But the Stadia team also recognises that, during this transitional period that's headed towards a digital-only gaming landscape, choice must be offered to both gamers and publishers.

"Not every developer and publisher is ready to move to subscription yet," he said.

"Frankly, not every gamer is ready to move to subscription yet. So we wanted to give gamers a choice so they could engage in the games they wanted in the way they wanted - and in all cases, without the very high upfront cost of buying a sophisticated device to put under their TV or on their desk."

It's a fascinating interview, and we'd urge you to read the whole thing over at Eurogamer.

Google Stadia will launch in November 2019, with Stadia Pro subscriptions costing $9.99 / £8.99 (about AU$14) a month, and requiring a 35Mbps internet connection to hit those full 4K HDR/60fps highs.

Huawei warns against politicizing IP issues

Huawei Technologies has warned against the politicization of innovation and intellectual property (IP) and said that it will threaten progress across the world. The Chinese telecom giant has been prevented from buying parts or technology from US suppliers without government approval as its equipment is considered potential tools for Chinese espionage which Huawei has openly denied.

Song Liuping, Huawei’s chief legal officer, said in a statement that IP is the cornerstone of innovation and “if politicians use IP as a political tool, they will destroy confidence in the patent protection system. If some governments selectively strip companies of their IP, it will break the foundation of global innovation.”

In its latest white paper on innovation and intellectual property, Huawei has been granted 87,805 patents in 2018, of which 11,152 are US patents. Since 2015, Huawei has received over $1.4b in licensing revenue and also paid more than $6b in royalties to legally implement the IP of other companies, with nearly 80% of that paid to American companies, according to the document.

In the past 30 years, Song said that no court has ever concluded that Huawei engaged in malicious IP theft, and Huawei has never been required by the court to pay damages for this. Even though some countries do not buy products directly from Huawei, Song said that they still use the essential patents of Huawei in 3G, 4G and 5G, and share in the benefits of the technology Huawei creates.

Song also addressed Huawei’s stance on its use of patents, saying the company will not weaponize its portfolio of patents. Rather, he said, Huawei will adopt an open and cooperative attitude and follow the FRAND principle, or “fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory,” when engaging with relevant parties in the industry on patents licensing.

“As always, Huawei is ready and willing to share our technology with the world. That includes 5G. It includes US companies and US consumers. Together, we can drive our industry forward and advance technology for all mankind,” said Song.

Upcoming Doom TV series will focus on the game’s creation at id Software

If there's one thing we've learned from shows and movies like Halt and Catch Fire, Silicon Valley and The Social Network, it's that the inner-workings of tech and game companies make for incredibly compelling viewing.

Now, we could have a new TV show to look forward to, with news that USA Network has ordered a pilot for a series based on Masters of Doom, the 2003 non-fiction book by David Kushner that recounts the founding of id Software and the creation of its beloved Doom franchise, as reported by Deadline.

Hurt me plenty

The series will focus on the company's key founders, programmer John Carmack and designer John Romero – two best friends who would go on to become bitter rivals following a major falling out during the development of id Software's Doom II follow-up, Quake.

Tom Bissell has been tapped for pilot writing duties – a great choice given his previous work on the game-themed book Extra Lives: Why Video Games Matter and as lead writer on Gears of War 4, along with the indispensable knowledge he would've likely gained from his time working at id Software as a game tester.

Masters of Doom will be produced by James and Dave Franco's company Ramona Films, which made the award-winning film The Disaster Artist based on a book which Bissell co-authored.

If picked up for a series order, Masters of Doom "would serve as the first installment in a planned anthology," in which "each subsequent season would then be based on seminal moments in the history of video games," as reported by Variety.

Google now lets users auto-delete their location and web history

Back in May, Google announced it would be introducing an option for users of its services to automatically delete their online history, and today the tech giant has begun rolling out the update around the globe.

Specifically, Google account holders will be able to choose a time limit of either 3 or 18 months, after which, their location, web, and app history will automatically be deleted.

Users can enable this feature by navigating to your Google account’s Activity Controls page, either on mobile or web, from which you can choose to ‘manage activity’ on either your 'Web & App Activity' or 'Location History' pages.

Depending on what’s become available to you, you’ll be able to ‘Choose How Long to Keep’ your data on either, both, or neither of these pages. If you select either the 3 or 18 month options, you’re given the choice to enact this setting from now on, or delete everything outside of that time period retroactively.

While users were previously able to do much the same thing by exploring these settings, having to manually delete their history each time meant keeping vigilant if they wanted to maintain a balance between their privacy and the personalization features that rely on this stored data.

The option to entirely turn off the collection of these types of user data is also available, but as mentioned, this will limit some of the search giant’s functionality when it comes to personalizing user recommendations across web searches, maps and other Google products.

Russia's largest search engine hacked by Western intelligence agencies

The search engine Yandex, often referred to as Russia's Google, was the target of a cyberattack that occurred late last year which was orchestrated by hackers working for Western intelligence agencies.

The hackers deployed a rare type of malware, called Reign, in an attempt to spy on user accounts according to a new report from Reuters who spoke with four people familiar with the incident. This particular strain of malware is known to be used by the Five Eyes nations as a result of Edward Snowden leaking classified NSA documents.

While cyberattacks against Western organizations and governments receive a great deal of media attention, similar attacks against Russia are rarely acknowledged or discussed openly in public.

Those familiar with the incident were able to determine that one of the Five Eyes nations orchestrated the cyberattack but they remain unsure as to whether the US, the UK, Australia, New Zealand or Canada was responsible.

Yandex cyberattack

The security breach of Yandex took place between October and November of 2018 and the hackers were able to covertly maintain their access to the company's systems for at least several weeks before they were ultimately detected.

Reuter's sources said that the hackers were searching for technical information that could explain how the Russian company authenticates user accounts. This information could be leveraged by a spy agency to impersonate a Yandex user and access their private messages.

However, the hack of Yandex's research and development unit was an espionage operation as opposed to one aimed at disrupting the company's business or stealing its intellectual property.

Now that the news of the cyberattack on its company is out, Yandex has responded in a press release in which it reassured its users that no customer data was affected by the breach, saying:

“Cyber attacks are a common occurrence throughout the world. This particular attack was detected at an early stage by the Yandex security team. It was fully neutralized before any damage to Yandex customers' data was done. At this point in time we are not disclosing any further details about the attack. The Yandex security team’s response ensured that no user data was compromised by the attack.

“Ensuring the security of user data is of critical importance to us. Following the attempted attack, we took the necessary measures to ensure that we would not be susceptible to such an attack in the future.  We continue to employ all relevant cyber defense tools and also cooperate with leading third-party experts and providers to protect our users' privacy.”

Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft say Chinese tariffs will make game consoles pricier

In an uncharacteristic show of camaraderie, the three major players in the video gaming console industry – Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft – have today banded together to warn the US government of the negative impact its proposed tariffs would have on the industry.

An open letter has been sent to a representative of the US government after it asked for public comment on its proposal of a 25% tariff on all goods manufactured in China.

This would include a huge range of consumer electronics, including video game consoles made by the three companies – the Sony PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and Microsoft Xbox One.

The letter makes the point that “Video games are a core part of the fabric of American entertainment culture” and that “two out of three households have at least one video game player and 60% of Americans play video games daily.”

The letter goes on to claim that “a price increase of 25% will likely put a new video game console out of reach for many American families who we expect to be in the market for a console this holiday season. For those purchases that do go forward despite tariffs, consumers would pay $840 million more than they otherwise would have.”

The three companies state that more than 96% of all consoles in the US in 2018 were manufactured in China and, given the entrenched nature and already-tight margins of such production, any shift in this process would cause significantly increased costs of the products, which would be carried directly by US consumers.

The overarching intention of the letter is to highlight the “disproportionate harm caused by these tariffs” compared with the preservation of the US tech industry, which is what the proposed tariffs supposedly seek to address.

Higher video game console pricing isn't the only adverse affect of the tariffs the letter addresses, with the document also claiming the taxation changes would “put thousands of high-value, rewarding US jobs at risk and stifle innovation in our industry”, which in turn would negatively impact the overall US economy.

The government has yet to issue a formal response to the open letter.
