Facebook lists steps to protect State elections in India - But are they enough?

These days whenever high-stakes elections happen, all eyes turn towards various social media platforms as hate speeches and fake news begin to be circulated due to myriad vested interests at play.

And Facebook being the biggest social media platform has often faced criticism not doing enough to curb the spread of misleading and triggering content.

And as four major States go for polls in India, the Facebook is again under the scrutiny.

But this time, the social media giant has come up with steps to clamp down on malicious content on its platform.

"We believe Facebook has an important part to play in creating an informed community, and helping people access all the information they need to take part in the democratic process. We also remind people to exercise their democratic right to vote," it said.

Misleading content will be axed

Facebook has said it would temporarily reduce the distribution of content from accounts that have recently and repeatedly violated the company's policies.

This content will be removed if determined to violate Facebook's policies, but its distribution will remain reduced until that determination is made.

"We recognise that there are certain types of content, such as hate speech, that could lead to imminent, offline harm...To decrease the risk of problematic content going viral in these states and potentially inciting violence ahead of or during the election, we will significantly reduce the distribution of content that our proactive detection technology identifies as likely hate speech or violence and incitement," Facebook said in a blogpost.

Facebook uses tech to weed out hate speech

Facebook said it is taking steps to enhance civic engagement, combat hate speech, limit misinformation and remove voter suppression amid elections across Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Assam, Kerala and Puducherry.

"We also continue to closely partner with election authorities, including to set up a high priority channel to remove content that breaks our rules or is against local law after receiving valid legal orders," it said.

Facebook pointed out that under its existing Community Standards, it removes certain slurs that it determines to be hate speech.

Facebook also uses technology to identify new words and phrases associated with hate speech, and either remove posts with that language or reduce their distribution.

Facebook said its policies prohibit voter interference, defined as objectively verifiable statements such as misrepresentation of dates and methods for voting (for example text to vote). It also removes offers to buy or sell votes with cash or gifts.

Facebook fact-checks in 11 Indian languages

Facebook also works with third-party fact-checkers --- it has eight partners in India --- to provide people with additional context about the content they're seeing on Facebook.

In addition to English, these eight partners fact-check in 11 Indian languages including Bengali, Tamil, Malayalam and Assamese.

When a fact-checker rates a story as false, such content is labelled and shown lower in News Feed, significantly reducing its distribution.

For the record, Facebook has been taking such measures during national elections across many countries, including India.

During 2019 national election in India, Facebook had set up a high priority channel with the Election Commission of India (ECI) for Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, to receive content-related escalations.

But this is probably the first suo motu announcement from Facebook for Indian State elections.

Its announcement for State polls show how important India is to Facebook. India is among the biggest markets for Facebook and its group companies, WhatsApp and Instagram. India has 53 crore WhatsApp users, 41 crore Facebook users, and 21 crore users of Instagram.

PUBG Mobile India could launch in two months' time

PUBG Mobile India launch has been a roller coaster. It was supposed to be the game's new localized variant tailored for the Indian market -- but it never got to see the light of day. While many have given up their hopes, a new development states that it will be available in a few weeks.

In September of 2020, the Indian government’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology blocked 118 apps including PUBG Mobile with Chinese connections over mishandling of users’ data. To return to India, PUBG Corp. decoupled from Tencent for its Indian operations and announced the development of PUBG Mobile India --- a new variant of the game with servers located in India, lesser violence, new visuals and smaller download size. A PUBG India Pvt. Ltd. company was also incorporated.

However, these efforts are yet to bear fruits, as the Government is still to approve of PUBG Mobile India. In fact, subsequent reports even stated that it might never launch in India again.

In a development that will please many gamers, YouTuber GodNixon (Luv Sharma) claims that the required approvals are in place, citing sources close to the government, in a video title “PUBG Mobile India Update! Government Approved”. It needs to be noted that there is no official confirmation of the same, so take this with a pinch of salt.

At the same time, another streamer that goes by the name of Ghatak (Abhijeet Andhare) tweeted about PUBG Mobile India: “I wasn’t going to reveal this, couldn’t hold myself back due to the support from the community. The next two months will be very good for PUBG lovers with interesting news coming soon”, without mentioning a date. While PUBG is likely to involve popular personalities in the re-launch, the partners wouldn’t be allowed to just reveal such a major announcement ahead of time, making us question the authenticity of the tweet.

It’s been more than six months since PUBG Mobile was banned from India, with nary a positive announcement. These developments, even if positive, aren’t enough to get excited about its return to India. We will be keeping an eye for an official confirmation.

Nvidia finally switches on GeForce GPU Passthrough

If you have a Nvidia GPU, you'll now be able to use GeForce GPU Passthrough when running virtual machines on Windows.

While the feature has been used for a while now, the company didn't officially support the technology in the past but this has changed with the announcement that GeForce GPU Passthrough for Windows Virtual Machine is now in beta.

GeForce desktop graphics cards that are based on the Kepler, Maxwell or Pascal architectures or newer will be able to take advantage of GPU passthrough when running a virtual machine on Windows. Users that want to leverage GPU passthrough on a laptop though will need a GPU based on the Maxwell architecture or newer.

By using GPU passthrough, developers can use virtual machines to test software and even games on different operating systems while only using one machine. Linux users on the other hand will be able to play Windows-based games using a virtual machine with GPU passthrough enabled.

GeForce GPU Passthrough

In order to start using GeForce GPU Passthrough on your system, you'll need to ensure that you have the R465 driver installed.

While GPU passthrough could be a godsend for developers that want to test code in both Windows and Linux on one machine, there are some limitations.

For instance, Nvidia's GeForce GPU Passthrough technology only allows for one virtual machine to access the host machine's GPU. If you need to run multiple virtual machines using a single GPU, the company's GeForce graphics cards won't suffice. Instead you'll need to upgrade to either a Tesla or Quadro graphics card.

Now that Nvidia officially supports GPU passthrough, we'll likely see further enhancements and features that leverage the technology in the future.

Netflix is making two Knives Out sequels

Rian Johnson scored a big win with 2019's Knives Out, a star-studded 'whodunnit' that proved both a critical and commercial hit for the writer-director following his successful-yet-divisive Star Wars film, The Last Jedi.

Johnson announced plans for a Knives Out sequel shortly after the first film's release that would see Daniel Craig return as detective Benoit Blanc to solve an entirely new mystery.

Although news on the follow-up has been quiet since then, a major development has occurred today, with Variety reporting that Netflix has purchased the rights to not one, but two Knives Out sequels for the astonishing price of $450 million.

The deal will see Johnson return to write and helm the two sequels, alongside Craig who will reprise his role as the brilliant, Southern-fried investigator who must solve an especially complex murder mystery with numerous suspects.

Why Knives Out is a good investment for Netflix

While $450 million may seem like an outrageous sum to pay for two mid-budget mystery films, the purchase does provide Netflix with a ready-made franchise which already has a built-in fanbase.

Netflix has amassed an enormous audience over the years, but has so far struggled to develop compelling film properties which have lasting appeal.

Recently, the company has attempted to kick off a number of blockbuster-style franchises with the likes of The Old Guard, Project Power and Outside the Wire, but most (with the exception of the Chris Hemsworth's record-smashing actioner Extraction) have faded from memory rather quickly.

On top of this, Netflix now has to compete with Disney Plus and HBO Max, which have a number of enormous franchise films in the pipeline from the likes of Star Wars, Marvel and DC, so it makes sense for the streaming giant to aggressively build its own exclusive properties with legitimate franchise appeal.

The first Knives Out made an impressive $311 million at the global box office from a budget of just $40 million. The film also earned Johnson an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay. At present, it's unknown whether Knives Out 2 and 3 will also be released theatrically.

VMware launches new multi-cloud platform to accelerate app modernization

The cloud services giant VMware aims to help customers unlock the power of multi-cloud and deliver modern applications at the speed of business with the launch of its new multi-cloud platform VMware Cloud.

VMware Cloud is a distributed, multi-cloud platform that enables organizations to accelerate app modernization across the data center, edge and any cloud. The new platform also provides distinctive advantages to both developers and IT operators who are often forced to make trade offs.

With VMware Cloud, developers can be more productive as it allows them to build and deploy applications to any cloud. At the same time though, the platform enables IT departments to modernize their infrastructure and operations with better economics and less risk.

COO of products and cloud services at VMware Raghu Raghuram provided further insight on the advantages of VMware Cloud in a press release, saying:

“We are on the cusp of the next evolution of cloud and apps. Architectures are becoming distributed and increasingly multi-cloud, while modern applications will soon outnumber traditional apps. The challenge for any CIO is to take advantage of this new innovation without introducing more complexity and risk. VMware Cloud is the only cloud solution today that customers can use in the datacenter and on any cloud, accelerating their modernization journey with speed, simplicity, and better security. With VMware Cloud Universal, customers make a single purchase and gain the ability to deploy apps across any environment, then move them as business or application requirements change.”

VMware Cloud

By using VMware Cloud, customers can deploy apps to VMware Cloud Foundation running in AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, IBM Cloud and Oracle Cloud on VMware Cloud on Dell EMC and across hundreds of VMware Cloud Verified partners.

With the launch of VMware Cloud, the company is also announcing new offerings that bring a more integrated experience to customers including VMware Cloud Universal, VMware Cloud Console and VMware Cloud Navigator.

VMware Cloud Universal is a flexible subscription that simplifies the purchase and consumption of VMware multi-cloud infrastructure and management services. Once customers purchase credits they can apply them to deployments of VMware Cloud Foundation on premises, VMware Cloud on AWS, or VMware Cloud on Dell EMC. The subscription also includes built-in Kubernetes through VMware Tanzu Standard.

VMware Cloud Console supports this new subscription and delivers end-to-end visibility and control of all VMware Cloud infrastructure across on-premises, cloud and edge environments. This integrated portal allows customers to allocate, manage and better optimize all of their VMware Cloud resources.

Finally, organizations can use VMware App Navigator to prioritize app modernization initiatives and deliver results faster. The new offering uses automated tooling and hands-on experimentation to plan just enough to get started, then quickly scale app and cloud transformation initiatives.

iOS 14.5 release date, beta and every new feature the update brings to your iPhone

iOS 14.5 is the next version of iOS, and while it won’t be as big an update as iOS 15, which isn’t expected to land in finished form until September, it’s still set to add a bunch of new features and improvements.

We know this because iOS 14.5 is already in beta, so developers and members of the public have turned up all sorts of interesting additions. Some of these are handy upgrades, like an alternative to Face ID that lets you unlock your iPhone by wearing an Apple Watch.

iOS 14.5 beta 6 has arrived with another promising feature – recalibrating your iPhone's battery life estimates to correct faulty readings. Unfortunately, that feature's only for the iPhone 11 range at first, though we can't imagine why it won't come to other Apple phones.

Below, we’ve highlighted the four best things we’re expecting in iOS 14.5. It’s worth noting that there’s a chance some of these things won’t turn up, as occasionally features in beta don’t make it to the finished release, but we’d certainly expect most of them.

We’ve also included information on when iOS 14.5 is likely to land, so that those who don’t want to brave the beta will know how long they have to wait.

Latest news

The iOS 14.5 beta 6 for developers came out, and with it the capability to recalibrate battery life estimates. This takes time – up to several weeks – and only seems to be for the iPhone 11 range for now.

Cut to the chase

  • What is it? The next upgrade for your iPhone
  • When is it out? Possibly in March 2021
  • How much will it cost? It will be free

iOS 14.5 release date and beta

There’s no news on exactly when iOS 14.5 might launch, but we have reason to believe it’s coming very soon.

There are a couple of reasons for that. Firstly, it’s already available in both public and developer betas, which suggests it would probably arrive soon. But secondly and more significantly, Apple has launched a new 14.x version every calendar month since the launch of iOS 14, and iOS 14.4 landed in January, so we could see iOS 14.5 this month (March).

That said, iOS 14.4 started rolling out at the end of January, and the actual gap between new versions is over a month on average, so it might be towards the end March by the time we get iOS 14.5.

Expect to hear an exact date for the rollout before it arrives on your phone, but it's likely to be a quick turnaround between us hearing the new software upgrade is out and it actually landing on your iPhone.

Five things iOS 14.5 will bring to your iPhone

We’re expecting a bunch of updates as part of iOS 14.5, but below we’ve listed the five most interesting ones that we’ve heard about so far.

1. Mask support for Face ID

iPhone X

Face ID was great until we all started wearing masks, but with iOS 14.5 Apple is making it great again, at least for Apple Watch owners.

That’s because as long as your Apple Watch is unlocked, you’ll now be able to use it to authenticate your identity on your phone, meaning you can simply raise your phone as if to use Face ID, and it will unlock, with a buzz on your wrist to tell you your watch has done the heavy lifting.

However, while this will work for unlocking your iPhone, it doesn’t currently work for other things that rely on Face ID, such as authenticating purchases. Still, it's a handy workaround for users who have had facial recognition blocked when wearing face masks – and given the feature arrived in iOS 14.5 beta 2 for developers, we'd expect this to land in the full release.

2. A change to your music players

Previously, we'd thought this change meant that you'd be able to change your default music player in iOS 14.5. A new update from Apple has confirmed that it won't work in the exact way we had expected though.

A new feature will allow you to better use your own choice of music players rather than your iPhone defaulting to Apple Music, but it isn't a specific change you can make within a Settings menu.

Instead, Siri will use its learning of how you listen to music, audiobooks and podcasts. When you ask it to play a specific piece of audio, it'll then ask you where you want to listen to it.

Then it'll gently integrate that into your future listening, and that likely means that in the future your iPhone will learn you listen to music on Spotify and podcasts on the Apple Podcasts app.

3. App Tracking Transparency

App Tracking Transparency

iOS 14.5 is also expected to include a big new privacy feature called App Tracking Transparency. This will require apps to get your permission before sharing your activity and data with websites and apps owned by other companies.

This sharing of data is often used for adverts, with Facebook for example making big use of it, but with App Tracking Transparency you’ll be able to opt out if you’d prefer, and Apple is insisting that users still have full access to apps even if they do opt out of this.

4. PS5 and Xbox Series X controller support

If you’re a gamer then you’ll probably appreciate the addition of support for PS5 and Xbox Series X controllers as part of iOS 14.5. The Verge reports that this feature has been found in the public beta, and it should be a handy upgrade for anyone who owns one of these consoles, especially those who also make use of Apple Arcade.

Arguably this would be even more useful for gaming on an Apple TV, and while the feature isn’t yet confirmed for tvOS, we’d expect it will soon be added to that too.

5. Crowdsourced alerts in Apple Maps

Apple Maps iOS 14.5

Many of us aren’t really going anywhere at the moment, but for those who do have much use for Apple Maps, there’s a potentially handy new feature in the iOS 14.5 beta.

MacRumors reports that you can now report accidents, hazards, and speed checks on your journey, and presumably if enough people flag the same thing a warning about it will appear on Apple Maps – though with so many people staying at home and the feature still being in beta, it’s not getting enough use for that to have been confirmed as far as we can see.

There’s a lot on the line for the two super-welterweight fighters, with both eyeing a path to a world title shot. Here, we’ll let you know how to watch the Tszyu vs Hogan live stream in Australia.

Tszyu, the son of legendary boxer Kostya Tszyu, has an undefeated record of 17-0, with 13 wins by knockout. The 26-year-old most recently demolished former welterweight champion Jeff Horn, and later made quick work of New Zealander Bowyn Morgan with a first round knockout in December, 2020.

Tszyu vs Hogan: live stream and time

Fight night is here. Tonight’s (March 31) Tszyu vs Hogan match-up airs live from the Newcastle Entertainment Centre in NSW, Australia, and the two fighters are set to begin their ring walks at around 10.30pm AEDT (local time). Australians can watch Tszyu vs Hogan on Kayo Sports as a pay-per-view event, or on Foxtel’s Main Event.

The 36-year-old Hogan is no amateur boxer, but he has been away from the ring for over a year. He last fought Jermall Charlo in December 2019, which saw Charlo win by TKO by way of a devastating left hook in the seventh round.

Before losing to Charlo, Hogan was defeated by Mexican boxer Jaime Munguía via majority decision, a controversial decision that Hogan and his corner called out as robbery.

Hogan will be looking to end his two-fight losing streak, as he makes his play to get back onto the world stage. Tszyu is a young star on the rise who will be looking to cement his status as a title contender with another assertive win.

Whoever gets their glove raised at tonight’s fight could be in with a shot at the WBO title against current champion Brian Castano. The stakes are high for both fighters, and here’s how you can live-stream the action.

Why it is such a big deal

With the Galaxy S20 FE 5G launch in India, this becomes the only flagship smartphone in India from Samsung to be powered by a Snapdragon chipset (excluding foldables). The previous one was the Galaxy S10 Lite. While phones such as the Galaxy S21 series, Note 20 series are great flagship phones, we couldn't wholeheartedly recommend them as they were powered by Exynos chipset. But, with the S20 FE 5G edition, we can easily recommend this phone to anyone who's looking for a Samsung-made flagship phone with no compromises.

Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G specs

Apart from the one major change that comes in terms of the silicon, everything else remains similar to the 4G variant. As pointed out earlier, the device is powered by  Snapdragon 865 chipset which also comes with Snapdragon X55 modem that offers 5G capability. The device is available in x variants with up to 12GB and 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage.

The Samsung S20 FE flaunts a 6.5-inch super AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. It also houses an optical fingerprint scanner and it is also IP68 water-resistance. There’s a 12MP f/1.8 primary camera with OIS followed by a 12MP ultra-wide shooter with a 123-degree field-of-view and an 8MP telephoto lens with OIS. Selfies are handled by a 32MP shooter housed inside the Infinity-O cutout.

The Galaxy S20 FE packs in a 4,500mAh and supports 25W fast charging support and you also get wireless charging and USB PD standard support. The device runs on Android 11 out of the box.

Sony PlayStation 5 India restock apparently postponed again, Indian gamers furious

The way Sony India has gone about with the launch of the PS5 has been less than desirable from gamers' perspective. Sony announced a pre-order of its newest console two months after the official global launch date in India. And after the initial round of pre-orders the company has not brought any restocks officially to India.

As the rumors stood, the company was set to bring PS5 restocks in India at the end of March. But according to this IGN India report, Bengaluru-based store Prepaidgamercard has informed that the restock date has now been moved to April.

Check out the PlayStation 5 on Amazon.in

OR

On Flipkart

Rs 49,990 | Digital Edition: Rs 39,990

This is in direct conflict of the news from Croma and Sony Centers which informed people that the restocks would happen in March. Previous reports had claimed that the restocks are delayed and would apparently be set for the second week of April.

But like most, we recommend that the users do not take this news as confirmed information, and this is based on Sony's attitude towards its India consumers. And this confusion is fueled on by the fact that Sony has maintained a steely silence when it comes to PS5 in India. Sony PlayStation India boss Prosenjit Ghosh's comment in 2020 made it clear that the PS5 is not even a priority for the company.

Potential buyers of the PS5 and gamers are quite naturally enraged by this blatant disregard for them. Considering that the US and other territories are getting regular restocks and even Xbox Series X has received multiple restocks since it had a timely launch in India, the situation with the PS5 is even more of an eyesore.

Sony has claimed that the market share of its consoles in India is the biggest and yet it manages to ignore the restocks of its newest console. And it's not like there isn't a demand for the console in India, and in fact the Indian gaming community has been vociferously asking for restocks.

Small business ideas are easy to find, but some are total duds. To be your own boss, you need a business that will make you money and make you happy.

Luckily, this list is packed with profitable, scalable business ideas.

Whether you want to launch a dropshipping store or flex your skills with a website design business, you can find a customer base in 2021.

Why should you start a small business now?

It takes confidence to start a business, but entrepreneurs have a lot to gain by going it alone. Here are some of the big perks running a small business can bring you:

  • Independence - Small business owners can do things their own way, from the business plan and marketing to services or products sold.
  • Flexibility - Although starting a business takes a decent amount of effort, the payoff is being able to work from home or fit clients around your schedule.
  • Innovation - When you’re the person in control of the business, new ideas, projects, and opportunities are easy to grab hold of.

Feeling ready to start your business, but still need some inspiration? Read on for 7 of the best business ideas in 2021 for entrepreneurs.

1. eCommerce business

Let’s start out with one of the most versatile business ideas out there. If you’ve ever been tempted to launch a retail business, now is the time.

An eCommerce store is perfect for small business entrepreneurs who want a job they can do from home with surprisingly minimal startup costs.

Sure, you might want to make and store the products that you sell, but it’s easy to choose a business model like dropshipping that takes away the inventory management side of things.

With dropshipping, you order and ship products from suppliers based on demand from your customers. It’s a super low-investment option which still has traction.

Whatever ideas you come up with, you’ll need a website. The central function of eCommerce businesses, becoming a website owner isn’t as hard as you might think.

Overview of eCommerce Platforms

The fastest and most low-cost way to start a business online is with a website builder.

Although they’re low-cost, great website builders provide powerful tools to small businesses. Plus, you won’t need any coding skills to get started.

The very best website builder platforms have impressive eCommerce functions for your online store, too. Here’s a quick overview of what you can expect from the key players:

  • Zyro — Fast and intuitive with smart AI features to help with branding and imagery, Zyro’s online store builder is beginner-friendly, ideal for users with new business ideas.
  • Wix — Another feature-filled all-rounder, building an online store is made simple on this platform thanks to easily editable website templates and a worldwide customer base.
  • Shopify — Used globally by businesses and entrepreneurs, Shopify stores come with tons of integrations. Just beware the transaction fees if you don’t use Shopify Payments.
  • WooCommerce — Built for WordPress and packed with add-ons, this ecommerce platform is a great place for people with a little more website building and business experience.
  • BigCommerce — Ideal if you’re dropshipping products on your online store, this highly configurable platform has plenty of support for its users.

2. Create online courses

There are plenty more business ideas, if having an online store isn’t quite your thing. Instead of selling products, you could sell your skills with online courses.

It’s a lucrative home-based business to start in 2021 as people look for new learning opportunities. You can likely find clients willing to pay for your expertise in most industries.

Whether you’re a makeup artist or you can teach writing skills, figure out what sets you apart. Which courses are in demand?

Put together a business plan that takes your idea from side business to main business. Think about things like subscription models and creating video content.

Starting a business like this can be low-investment and easy to launch with just an internet connection. Just make sure that you have a niche and – most importantly – some expertise.

3. Affiliate marketing

Get businesses to pay you to promote their products. If you’re a confident kind of person or a marketing pro, this is one of those business ideas that can grow exponentially.

With affiliate marketing, you promote the products that another business or store sells, and earn commission from your clients if customers end up buying from your referral.

It’s a well-known side hustle that’ll bring in money while you focus on other business ideas, but some people are able start a business focused on affiliate marketing services.

To thrive as an affiliate marketer, it pays to establish a standout online presence and grow from there. You can easily get started from home.

Set up a blog, website, or leverage your social media accounts to bring your clients a wide range of customers.

4. Online coaching

Some of the best business ideas are about inspiring other people, not just selling products and services. If you’re that type of person, this idea is for you.

Self-improvement is always in style. If you’re able to offer a service like fitness, life, or career coaching, now is the time to start finding clients.

You’ll have to be an expert at the job, whether you’re a personal trainer or a content marketing guru. Most coaching clients are professionals searching for a high-impact service.

If you want to start a business coaching others, consider carving your niche by creating step-by-step programs or self-publishing a guide.

This is a cool low-cost online business idea that you can start from home. People are willing to pay for self-improvement, so set up a slick website and write your business plan.

5. Healthy catering service

Whether you’re a pro chef or a talented home cook feeding friends and family, there’s a small business opportunity waiting for you, too.

Foodie entrepreneurs have been changing the food business landscape for the last few years, making it easier for customers to find and buy healthy options.

People are embracing creative catering services more than ever, so this is an exciting business model to grab onto. Is there a niche that no one has thought of yet?

Storyboard some ideas for your catering service and get cooking. You could cater to specific clients or serve themed food, for example.

While a catering business is cool, make sure you’ve got the right permits if you turn this into your full-time job – especially if you work from home.

6. Craft beer and cocktail making

Some small business ideas aren’t super low-cost but they are super fun. Beer and cocktail making is one of them.

If you have the talent (and the startup capital), this is a cool and profitable business to start. The demand for craft beer and cocktail kits seems to be soaring.

A lot of people start a business like this from a hobby or passion. It’s possible to get brewing at home, but as with catering services you’ll need to check for certification requirements.

Craft beer and cocktail making takes some real skills, so prepare for the startup costs and the learning curve.

That said, if you work with the right people and nail your marketing efforts, you can create incredible in-demand products. Check out some brewery success stories to inspire you.

7. Virtual assisting

If you’re set on starting a low-cost small business from home, offering your services as a virtual assistant is a worthwhile move.

You might even be surprised to find out that businesses pay good money for someone else’s organizational skills. So if you’re an organized person, get networking.

As a virtual assistant, you could offer a range of services, starting from filing emails to planning calendars and streamlining the day-to-day life of a business professional.

This kind of service takes a proactive approach and a great network of customers. That said, it’s a great home business idea and pretty low-investment to start.

Why not think differently with your business marketing, and use your social media accounts to reach out to younger professionals or other small businesses?

How to choose the right business idea for you

So many small business ideas – how do you know which business to start? Well, that’s down to you.

If this long list of business ideas has inspired you, but you’re still not sure whether to open a store or offer cleaning services, here’s how to work it out:

  • Find your passion - A small business can be low-cost to start, but demanding to run. Ensure you’re pursuing business ideas and customers you’ll love.
  • Know your strengths - Starting a business needs expertise. Impress people by creating a small business you understand.
  • Determine your capital - There are plenty of low-cost business ideas out there, but you might need to spend money to make money.
  • Conduct market research - Make sure you’re offering services or products that people want. Only pursue small business ideas that are in demand.

YouTube testing removing public 'Dislike' counts on videos - will it get a thumbs up?

As all social media platforms are now keen to come down on negative behaviour (on their platforms), YouTube too seems to have joined the fray. It has launched a new experiment which will see the 'dislike' counts visible to the public removed on some creators' videos.

Creators of videos will, however, continue to see the full like and dislike counts in YouTube Studio. Further, viewers will also be able to like and dislike videos as normal. Just that the dislike numbers won't be visible.

In a few weeks time, YouTube will start selecting users to be part of this experiment. And they, in turn, can provide feedback related to the new design.

YouTube wants to improve creators' experience

YouTube's idea is to address issues like orchestrated dislike campaigns and the impact of negative indicators on user well-being.

“In response to creator feedback around well-being and targeted dislike campaigns, we're testing a few new designs that don't show the public dislike count. If you're part of this small experiment, you might spot one of these designs in the coming weeks,” YouTube said in a tweet from its official account.

"Viewer feedback has always been, and will continue to be, an important part of YouTube. But we've heard from creators that the public dislike counts can impact their wellbeing, and may motivate a targeted campaign of dislikes on a creator’s video. So, we're testing designs that don’t include the visible like or dislike count in an effort to balance improving the creator experience, while still making sure viewer feedback is accounted for and shared with the creator," it said in a separate post.

The 'like' and 'dislike' counts, generally seen as 'vanity metrics' one way or the other, have become hot topics as social media platforms grapple with the issue of negative impact on its users due to trolls and campaigns.

Not the final decision on 'dislike' button

YouTube had earlier wrestled with the idea of removing the dislike the button lock, stock and barrel.

But the Google-owned platform now seems to be feeling that would be an overkill.

It now says: "We’re just experimenting with a few designs that don’t show the dislike counts. We’ll be keeping a close eye on the feedback from these experiments to determine what decisions we may want to make in the future."

It may be recalled that Instagram is also experimenting with the removal of public like counts. It is also testing the option of allowing users to display 'like' counts with their posts in a non-numeric way.
