Instagram launches ‘Remix’ on Reels - Another cloned feature from TikTok

Instagram, which is aggressively pushing its short video format Reels in India as it sees a big opportunity in the absence of TikTok here, has announced a new feature, Remix, for the app.

Remix lets you to record a Reels video alongside a video (an existing Reel) from another user --- in that sense, it is a clone of TikTok’s Duets feature that allows users to respond to another person’s video content with their own.

Facebook, which launched Reels in India first, recently announced that Instagram creators can have their public Reels recommended on Facebook in India. It was evidently aimed at boosting Reels in scale.

New features to Reels since its launch

Interactive tools like Live Rooms, polls and questions in Stories, and AR effects have always been a huge part of how people connect on Instagram.

Such features are expected to make the platform more connected and allow more to collaborate with each other.

Since the launch of Reels last year, several new features have been added to it. "This includes extending the recording time limit up to 30 seconds, extending the countdown timer to 10 seconds while recording, and adding options to trim and delete clips from the timeline," a press release from Instagram said.

There have also been updates to the audio features, where users can  save audio clips, share audio pages, and browse for trending songs.

This is how Remix works

* Find a reel

* Tap the three dot menu on a reel and select “Remix this Reel”

* The screen will split into the original reel and your new one -- start recording your Remix! Your recording will be side-by-side to the original reel

* Once recorded, you can control the volume for the original audio, your recorded audio, and add a voiceover.

* To edit volume controls tap the slider icon up top, to add a voiceover tap the microphone icon up top

* Edit as you desire, and post your remixed Reel.

* Only newly uploaded Reels will have Remix enabled.

Videos dominate on Instagram in India with two out of the five songs most shared globally on Reels are from Indian artistes.

The rollout of remix feature has begun. It will be enabled by default on all new Reels published from a public account.

LinkedIn confirms that a Clubhouse rival is in the works - here's what we know

Having launched a new way to make video profiles and a new Creator mode, now LinkedIn has confirmed that a rival to Clubhouse, an invitation-only audio chat room for iPhone users, is in the works.

LinkedIn, the world's earliest online professional network builder, is working on an audio-based networking feature is a result of its members seeking better ways to communicate on the platform. The company, founded in 2002, got acquired by Microsoft in 2016 for $26.2 billion.

What is Creator Mode?

The Creator Mode, which is slated to roll out to its global users from this week, can be used to create short video profiles targeting recruiters and potential employers. In addition, enabling the Creator Mode would allow users to add hashtags to suggest the topics that they care about most.

The new mode also moves your Featured and Activity sections to the top of your profile to more prominently display your content and changes the “Connect” button to “Follow” to help you better engage with your community and build a following.

Both Creator Mode and Cover Story will roll out to LinkedIn members globally beginning this week and these tools should make it easier for users to stand out on the platform and possibly find their next position or gig.

What's LinkedIn creating now?

A report published by TechCrunch quoted LinkedIn spokesperson Suzi Owens to say that the platform saw a 50% growth in conversations around stories, videos and posts on the platform. "We're studying some early tests to create a unique audio experience connected to your personal identity," the report said quoting Owens.

The company also confirmed that they were seeking ways to bring audio to other sections of LinkedIn such as events, groups etc. with a view to provide members with even more ways to connect to their community.

The report further suggested that LinkedIn had moved quickly to develop its own Clubhouse feature of a stage that showcases speakers in a room with listeners. In addition, there are tools that allow users to join and leave the room, respond to the comments, and request to speak.

These were actually discovered by reverse Engineer Allessandro Paluzzi who shared the developments via a tweet. However, TechCrunch showcased yet another image that has much more details of the new feature. The company says the audio experience will be linked with a user's professional identity, thus making them more comfortable to engage with the content.

Additionally, LinkedIn would also provide support of its other features such as LinkedIn Live to the audio service.  The company believes that the audio networking part of the deal is a natural extension of its other services such as Groups and Events that showed considerable growth in the post-pandemic time period.

All the action around Clubhouse

These developments indicate that LinkedIn is dead serious on competing with the likes of Clubhouse, which started operations in April 2020, and is currently valued at over $1 billion dollars. This resulted in other platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Telegram shifting focus to audio-based networking features.

While Twitter Spaces is already live in beta, the others haven't traversed far on this journey. Which makes these announcements from LinkedIn all the more crucial, given that Clubhouse itself appears to be taking its time with their development of the platform for Android users.

Clubhouse's founder Paul Davison was recently quoted to suggest that an Android version of their popular app could be just a few months away. There were also some reports that the app proposed to launch some tweaks on its "Activity Feed" besides adding new tools to give users more control over push notifications.

What to stream this long weekend: The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, Run and more highlights

With so many shows and movies to choose from on Australia's major streaming services, it can often be difficult to find the best new stuff to entertain yourself with each end of week – and this weekend is even longer than usual!

In an effort to make things easier, we've hand-picked the best new shows and movies to watch on Aussie streaming platforms, covering the likes of Netflix, Disney Plus, Binge, Foxtel Now, Stan and Amazon Prime Video.

Below, you'll find a list of this long weekend's highlights, separated by streaming service, with binge-worthy new shows sitting alongside some great big-budget new movie arrivals – and a couple of oddball left-of-field entries, just for some variety.

The big new shows and movies this weekend are the ultra-violent and highly anticipated animated series Invincible on Amazon Prime Video and The Irregulars on Netflix, however, there's a nice selection of other shows and movies landing on Australia's streaming services, too. Here are our streaming picks for the weekend of April 1-5, 2021.

Disney Plus

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier: Episode 3 (TV series – available 2/4/2021)

We're up to the third episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and we're still not sure how we feel about the new Captain America. Last week, Sam and Bucky finally teamed up and it's safe to say their first mission didn't go spectacularly well. We're looking forward to see how their dynamic evolves this weekend.

The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers: Episode 2 (TV series – available 2/4/2021)

It must be said that we got a real kick out of last week's premiere episode of The Might Ducks: Game Changers, with the show striking the right balance between heartfelt and funny. Fed up hockey mum Alex (Lauren Graham) went to great lengths to start a new team for her son after he was unceremoniously cut from The Mighty Ducks, and we got to meet the scrappy group of underdogs that make up said team. Will this week's episode see ex-Ducks coach Gordon Bombay (Emilio Estevez) agree to coach these kids? We'll have to wait and see.

Netflix

Run (Movie – available 2/4/2021)

The new Netflix Original film Run sees teenager Chloe (Kiera Allen) attempt to flee from home after years isolation and medical care, when she begins to suspect that her mother (Sarah Paulson) might be keeping sinister secrets and holding her daughter back on purpose. Sounds like it has all the makings of a first-rate thriller.

Binge / Foxtel Now

The Walking Dead: Season 10 Finale (TV Series – available 5/4/2021)

It's been a long time coming, but after multiple hiatus periods the tenth season of the hit series The Walking Dead will come to a close this weekend with the return of one of the show's most notorious villains. Now the real question is: who will live long enough to appear in the show's 11th and final season?

Amazon Prime Video

Blithe Spirit (Movie – available 2/4/2021)

Based on the classic 1941 play by the brilliant Noel Coward, this new film adaptation of Blithe Spirit sees Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey) in the role of Charles, a crime novelist who's struggling with writer's block and a punishing deadline. We don't want to ruin what comes next, but we will say that it involves a séance that backfires rather spectacularly. Also stars Judi Dench, Leslie Mann and Isla Fisher.

Stan

Clarice (TV Series – Episode 6 available 2/4/2021)

After a brief hiatus, Clarice returns this weekend with its sixth episode, meaning we're over halfway to the show's season finale. Last episode saw Clarice suffer a harrowing ordeal, in which she was drugged and confined to a hospital bed by a mad nurse. Now back at work, Agent Starling has a new occupational therapist, and it seems she must finally confront her demons before she can get her life back on track.
