iMac 2018: what we want to see

The iMac 2018 could use a refresh – short after the most recent model hit the market, packed with 7th-generation Kaby Lake processors, Intel released its 8th-generation Kaby Lake R and Coffee Lake processors. So, the iMac is currently one generation behind the competition when it comes to hardware – but we think the iMac 2018 will remedy this situation.

Following the surprise announcement for the MacBook Pro 2018, we may see the same happen with the iMac 2018. We’ve seen speculation from famed Apple analyst Ming Chi Kuo suggesting that the iMac 2018 will be one of the Macs released by Apple – alongside the Mac Mini 2018. 

Beyond that, we’ve seen rumors that three of the Macs that Apple will release this year will offload some functionality to a co-processor. We already saw the new MacBook Pros doing this, and we wouldn’t be surprised if the iMac 2018 followed the iMac Pro in its ‘Hey Siri’ implementation. These co-processors are likely an early part of Apple’s rumored ‘Kalamata Initiative’, which will reportedly see Apple replacing all Intel processors with Cupertino-crafted silicon by 2020.

You should also consider that the iMac 20th anniversary passed us in March. And, knowing Apple, we’re sure that it’s going to want to celebrate in some kind of commercially available way – so keep an eye out for some kind of special anniversary iMac.

It shouldn’t come as a shock that Apple is keeping quiet about the iMac 2018. However, that doesn’t stop us from exploring any iMac 2018 leaks and doing a bit of our own speculation. And, until Apple spills the beans, we’ve collected all the iMac 2018 rumors and speculation we could find to help us figure out what the iMac 2018 will look like – so be sure to keep this page bookmarked.

iMac 2018 release date

Until Apple graces us with some concrete information about the iMac 2018, we’ll have to do a bit of speculation.

The iMac 2017 update was revealed on June 5, 2017 at Apple’s WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conference) keynote. However, we missed the iMac 2018 at WWDC 2018. In fact, we didn’t see any hardware at all. So, hopefully the iMac 2018 release date is announced soon.

We could see the iMac 2018 coming out pretty soon, even though time is kind of running out if it’s going to launch before September. However, we did just see the MacBook Pro come out with almost no fanfare, so we could see Apple repeat this strategy with the iMac 2018 – especially since the 20th anniversary of the iMac has flown by us.

iMac 2018 price

Again, there’s not much to go on right now concerning what the price of a 2018 iMac might be. Hopefully, the price won’t stray too much from last year’s models, unless there is going to be some seriously large upgrades when it comes to components.

The base price of last year’s iMac is $1,099 (£1,049, AU$1,599), so we’d like to see a similar price with the iMac 2018. Of course, the iMac comes in various configurations (and prices) to suit your needs.

With the high-end iMac Pro starting at $4,999 (£4,899, AU$7,299), we can envision an iMac 2018 costing between $1,000 (£1,000, AU$1,500) and $2,500 (£2,000, AU$3,000).

While we don’t know too much about what the iMac 2018 will be like, we’ve got plenty of ideas about what we’d like to see in a new version of the all-in-one. Read on for our suggestions that would make the iMac 2018 the best iMac ever.

Celebrate the 20th anniversary in style

For any gadget, 20 years in the business is a big deal, so we’d love to see Apple do something special to mark the anniversary for this year’s iMac.

Apple have released special versions of its hardware to mark milestones before, such as the Twentieth Anniversary Macintosh, which was released in 1997 to mark Apple’s 20th birthday. Not to mention the release of the iPhone X to mark the 10-year anniversary of the iPhone.

With the iMac being so beloved, and its design so iconic, a special version of the iMac 2018 that paid tribute to its past could be a big hit with Apple fans and collectors.

A revamped design

While we love the look of the iMac, it’s sort of had the same design for the past 10 years, so 2018 could be a great year to tweak the look. That could mean a minor revision, such as slimming the body even further, or something more drastic.

Rumors of an iMac redesign have been swirling since a post on Reddit, apparently by a ‘Foxconn Insider’ who worked for the company that builds the devices for Apple, claimed there would be an update to the iMac and its peripherals.

Color-wise, the aluminum design of the iMac has been a staple since 2007, so we wouldn’t mind seeing another color option with the iMac 2018 – perhaps a Space Gray version, like the iMac Pro?

Take inspiration from the iMac Pro

The iMac Pro is a fantastic device, and while it is definitely a product aimed at a completely different audience than the iMac 2018 will be, there are a few things the standard iMac could incorporate from its more expensive sibling.

We’d love to see the iMac 2018 ditch the hard drive, and instead stick with solid state drives – this would allow Apple to make it even slimmer, while giving it a huge speed boost. Even better for photographers and filmmakers is if Apple allowed UHS-II SD card support, thereby streamlining the post-production process.

The iMac Pro also features some clever cooling technology to help reduce the heat of the components, again allowing for a thinner design without noisy fans, and we’d love to see that in the iMac 2018 as well.

Oh, and did we mention we’d really like to see a Space Gray iMac?

Take inspiration from the MacBook and iPhone

Whilst we’re getting ideas from other Apple devices, there’s a few things we’d like to see from the iPhone and MacBook appear in the iMac 2018.

For example, how cool would it be if the Touch Bar from certain MacBooks turned up on a redesigned iMac keyboard? Those touch-sensitive buttons would be a fantastic addition.

Also, we’ve been very impressed by the Face ID technology of the iPhone X, so if Apple is thinking of upgrading the FaceTime camera on the iMac 2018, we’d love to see this included, so we could unlock our new iMac with just a glance.

Boosted specs

We’d love to see the iMac 2018 toting some of the very latest, and best, components when it’s revealed to the world. 

While we’d love to see the iMac 2018, at least the entry-level version, running one of Intel’s latest quad core processors, if the iMac uses Intel’s Coffee Lake CPUs, we may even see an iMac 2018 with a six-core processor, which would give the all-in-one a real boost when it comes to multitasking.

Graphics-wise, the iMac could stick with AMD’s Vega graphics cards, and if Apple goes for one of the latest AMD card, or even one that has yet to be released, then the iMac 2018 could have some serious graphical chops.

Fingers crossed we see some – or all – of these predictions come to fruition later this year.

macOS 10.13 High Sierra release date, news and features

Until later this year, when macOS Mojave takes over, macOS High Sierra is the OS behind all of the best Macs – so, let’s dive into all the details surrounding Apple’s premier OS.

Now, while MacOS High Sierra hasn’t been without problems, like password vulnerabilities and other security issues – most macOS 10.13 High Sierra issues have been patched out by Apple, and thus our experience with the OS has been mostly positive. Plus, that new file system and built-in photo editing tools more than make up for any of macOS High Sierra’s launch woes.

Unfortunately, the major problem that macOS High Sierra faces is similar to the debacle that surrounded OS X Mountain Lion when it succeeded Lion – it introduces a number of new features, but doesn’t really innovate in any major way. Still, macOS Mojave looks like it’s going to change everything when it introduces several key iOS apps like News and Stocks.

In the meantime, here is everything you need to know about today’s macOS High Sierra.

macOS 10.13 High Sierra release date

Apple revealed macOS 10.13 High Sierra at the WWDC 2017 keynote, which is no surprise, given Apple’s tradition of announcing the latest version of its Mac software at its annual developer event.

Yet, it wasn’t until September 12 that Apple revealed that the full release of High Sierra would launch little more than a week later, on September 25. There was a developer version of the operating system you could enroll in leading to the final release, but luckily that’s no longer required to take advantage of the latest features found in macOS 10.13.

macOS 10.13.6, likely the final version of macOS High Sierra, has been released, and alongside a couple of bug fixes, it integrates Airplay 2 into iTunes (though you’ll also need to update iTunes to take advantage of it). You can download the update from the Mac App Store now. However, Apple has introduced a bug fix into macOS 10.13 High Sierra that will stop the new Core i9 MacBook Pro from thermal throttling.

However, if you’re interested in testing out new features and updates before everyone else, Apple is still supporting its beta program, which will let you download and install macOS Mojave now.

At the same time, it now uploads all Messages to the cloud and replaces iBooks with the newly rebranded ‘Books’ app. There’s also been a sweet smoke cloud wallpaper added across all systems that was formerly available only on the iMac Pro. 

For everyone else, the newest rendition of macOS as a whole is still 10.13.5 High Sierra, as we await the much-anticipated macOS 10.14. 

macOS 10.13 High Sierra features

Beyond the Hackintosh users being reasonably worried about the newly enforced security checks on EFI firmware automatically implemented each week, Apple has revealed a number of awesome new features with macOS 10.13 High Sierra. 

These include improvements to Safari – which will now stop ad-tracking and auto-playing videos in their tracks – and a more expansive Spotlight Search in the Mail App. Additionally, when you’re composing emails, the app now allows split view for the compose window – and, to make matters better, it uses up to 35% less disk space.

The Photos app has been updated in macOS 10.13 High Sierra as well, with a better sorting tool to boot. All of this is accompanied by a new layout, better facial recognition thanks to neural networks, and improved syncing across all Apple devices.

Editing tools, too, have seen improvements, in turn making it easier than ever to enhance the quality of your photos without learning the ins and outs of Photoshop or Camera RAW. And of course, you can count on Instagram-like filters being a part of this.

One of the biggest changes that comes with macOS High Sierra is with the file system. It’s ditching the HFS – which Apple has used for around 30 years, and is now using the Apple File System (APFS) instead. 

Every Mac that has been upgraded to macOS High Sierra will receive these file system updates automatically with the exception of those sporting Fusion Drives and older HDDs. Similarly, all new Macs will ship pre-formatted for APFS.

To be exact, APFS is a 64-bit file system that supports native encryption and faster metadata operation. This may all sound a bit techy, but the bottom line is that this will make your Mac feel a lot faster, while also being more secure and more transparent about the nature of your files and folder contents. Unfortunately, this comes with the caveat of Apple’s confirmation that 32-bit apps will be discontinued in later versions of macOS High Sierra.

The update also brings HEVC, or H.265, video compression to the Mac. Apple claims that this new standard can compress video files 40% more than the previous-generation H.264 standard. The end result will be faster video streams at higher resolutions – ahem, 4K – and smaller video files sizes when stored locally.

VR finally comes to the Mac

One of the biggest bits of news surrounding macOS High Sierra is that it will finally bring support for virtual reality headsets officially. Namely, the HTC Vive and Steam VR will work with Macs running the new OS this autumn.

However, to use such a device, you'll need at least a 5K iMac or MacBook Pro – or, any Mac that can run the new OS with an external graphics card box attached via Thunderbolt 3. Support for such devices comes part and parcel with macOS High Sierra, but won't be an active function until spring 2018.

The good news is that macOS High Sierra comes with a helping of refinements to its graphics API that make up for the scarce GPU support. Metal was a step forward for hardware-accelerated 3D graphics, but with Metal 2, Apple promises less strain on the CPU as well as proper machine learning and better Xcode profiling/debugging in macOS High Sierra.

Perhaps more important, though, is the fact that MoltenVK was recently brought to Mac by Khronos Group. An implementation of the open-source Vulkan API, it’s said to bring frame rate gains of up to 50% in Dota 2. As it’s cross-platform, too – being supported by Windows and Linux as well as Apple’s devices – MoltenVK is likely to be more widely adopted by creators.

macOS 10.13 High Sierra compatibility

Fortunately, in the act of creating a macOS iteration that only moderately shakes things up, the barrier to entry didn’t change at all. As long as you’re rocking one of the following Mac models, you’ll be good to go with macOS High Sierra on day one:

• Late 2009 iMac or newer 
• Late 2009 MacBook/MacBook (Retina) or newer
• Mid-2010 MacBook Pro or newer
• Late 2010 MacBook Air or newer
• Mid-2010 Mac Mini or newer
• Mid-2010 Mac Pro or newer
• 2017 iMac Pro

Bear in mind that if you want to take advantage of the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) benefits posed by macOS High Sierra, you’ll need a Mac donning – at the very least – an Intel sixth-generation Skylake processor. Unfortunately, that discounts everything released prior to 2015, but on the bright side, everything else macOS High Sierra brings to the table is fair game.

Call of Duty Black Ops IIII private beta gives PS4 fans the first go

Ready to take on hordes of cybernetic-enhanced soldiers? Your wait is almost over - Activision and Treyarch have just taken the wraps off of the first private multiplayer beta session for Call of Duty Black Ops IIII that will take place starting on August 3 and run until August 6 at 10 am PT / 1 pm ET / 5 pm GMT. 

Exciting as it may be to return to the battlefield, this warzone is VIP-only: This session is only available to those folks who have pre-ordered the game and plan on playing it on PS4. Sorry, Xbox One owners. 

For everyone else, the second session of the multiplayer beta will run August 10 until August 13 at 10 am PT / 5 pm GMT and will be open to both Xbox One and PS4 players. Not to be left behind, PC players will have their own dedicated open beta starting on August 11 that also runs until mid-day on August 13.

All of this is for the basic multiplayer mode. If you're eager to play Blackout - Call of Duty's take on the new battle royale genre - you'll have to wait until September. The beta for Blackout will first be available for PS4 players, just like the general multiplayer beta, but will eventually open up to include Xbox gamers, too.

Fall in, soldier

Betas traditionally serve as stress tests for game servers - allowing devs to know just how much rack space they'll have to allocate when a game launches. Considering this is the fourth Treyarch-made Black Ops game, it's unlikely that the veteran studio is using this as a server stress test and more than likely an opportunity to catch last-minute bugs and plug the game before its early October launch.

That being said, the private beta does provide a nice opportunity to go hands on with the game before launch - usually allowing players to keep any rewards they've earned going forward. A small victory, surely.

We're most interested in Blackout, the first battle royale mode in an established franchise like Call of Duty, to see how much Treyarch has lifted from competitors like Fortnite and PUBG. The announcement of Blackout excited and upset in equal measure with some crying fowl. But hey, all's fair in love and war, right? 

Call of Duty Black Ops IIII comes out on PS4, Xbox One and PC on October 12.

iPhone 9 release date, price, news and leaks

Intel roadmap points to the Core i9-9900K releasing in early 2019

Future Intel processor lineups have included almost a half dozen rumored codenames, but at long last we could finally have the details pinned down thanks to a leaked Intel roadmap.

Xfastest posted slides of what it claims to be an official Intel roadmap outlining the processor release schedule for the coming year. Going by the schedule, and disappointingly, we shouldn’t expect 9th generation Intel processors until the first few months of 2019. The Intel roadmap lists that the Core i9-9900K, Core i7-9700K and Core i5-9600K will all release in the first quarter of 2019.

The slides also confirm that 9th-generation Coffee Lake Refresh processors will be compatible with Intel 300-series chipsets, so you’ll supposedly be able to plug any of these next-gen CPUs into something as lowly as a H310 motherboard.

Just around the bend

What will be releasing within the year are Intel’s next high-end desktop processors, if this purportedly official roadmap is to be believed. Interestingly, the slides refer to Intel’s new HEDT family as Basin Falls Refresh, rather than Skylake-X Refresh or Cascade Lake-X as has previously been rumored.

The roadmap barely reveals any details, but we do see Basin Falls Refresh dominating Intel's entire release schedule from later this year to mid-2019. It also appears as if Basin Falls Refresh will replace every Core X and Extreme processor from the Core i5-7640X to the defunct Kaby Lake-X family to Intel’s highest-end consumer CPU, the Core i9-7980XE.

While these slides look more authentic than previous rumors, there’s no way to confirm their validity. There’s also no date attached, so even if they are genuine, the information contained within could be outdated. Previously we heard that Intel may even announce Coffee Lake Refresh processors tomorrow (August 1), although this seems unlikely at this point.

Sony’s new TV range has a dedicated Netflix viewing mode

Sony has announced a new range of televisions, the Master Series, in a series of live tweets from a press conference in New York today.

Sony's Twitter account introduced two new 4K television sets – the A9F and Z9F – under the Master Series branding, as a subset of the established Sony Bravia TV range. 

Paying tribute to its 50-year history in the TV industry, the manufacturer called it a “milestone event” and went on to announce a surprising new feature: Netflix Calibrated Mode.

The viewing mode is exclusive to Sony’s Master Series – for now, anyway – and aims to configure the television display in “the same way creators calibrate their monitors in post-production”, bringing your viewing experience of films and shows even closer to the people who made them.

Bill Baggelaar of Sony Pictures added: "We want you at home to be able to experience a movie or TV show as the director intended & as the director saw it."

Best of the best

The A9F is Sony’s new flagship OLED TV, which promises “top-of-the-line sound quality” with its Acoustic Surface Audio+ technology. 

The Z9F, on the other hand, is the culmination of Sony’s LED televisions, focusing on new technologies to improve the TV’s viewing angle, color consistency and motion blur.

The two model numbers were technically leaked back in May on Sony’s own e-support page. As predicted, both make use of Sony’s new high-power X1 Ultimate processor and will come in 55- and 65-inch versions.

TCL TV range finally hits UK shops

TCL is a household name in most parts of the world, being the third largest manufacturer of televisions on the planet. But you’d be hard pressed to find someone who has heard of it in the UK. That’s about to change though – TCL is bringing its range of affordable 4K smart TVs to UK stores.

From today, you’ll be able to purchase a range of sets from a range of AV retailers and a dedicated section of the Amazon store.

Set to take on Hisense for the wallet-friendly TV crown, it’s made its sets and smart TV apps “fully compliant with terrestrial broadcasting services,” meaning you’ll get the full complement of catch-up apps as well as a Freeview Play tuner in its UK range.

Roku rocking up?

Highlights of the range include the 43 and 55-inch DP608, which offers UHD HDR (HDR10+HLG) in a slim design for a mere £499 for the largest model, and the DP648 range (available in 43, 50, 55 and 65 inch sizes), again offering 4K HDR visuals in a set just 9.9mm wide at its thinnest point. 

Later in the year, TCL will also be offering the DC748 4K smart TV, available in 55 and 65-inch sizes. While its price is yet to be determined, it’ll offer a built in JBL sound bar which should elevate its audio above the usual shoddy standards of super-slim flat screen TVs.

“We see the UK market as one of great opportunity for TCL and are delighted to be up and running now, continuing the global success story that is TCL,” said TCL UK Country Manager Bernie Chen.

“We believe the UK will appreciate the high quality and technically excellent products as will appreciate the commitment to a unique design aesthetic found in our products.” 

While we’re waiting for clarification on its presence in the new sets, here’s hoping that TCL brings the superb Roku interface integration to its UK range too – an interface and app suite that really sets it apart from similarly-priced TV ranges.

The initiative, described by the company as the "first of its kind", will reward those who spot security flaws in its products with some serious money.

Anyone spotting a new flaw could be set to score up to $10,000, with HP also saying it may reward those who find existing threats with a "good faith payment" in certain cases.

HP has partnered with security crowdsourcing firm Bugcrowd to launch the program, utilising the latter's wide-ranging expertise and customisation to design a printer-specific program.

“As we navigate an increasingly complex world of cyber threats, it's paramount that industry leaders leverage every resource possible to deliver trusted, resilient security from the firmware up," said Shivaun Albright, HP chief technologist of print security. 

"HP is committed to engineering the most secure printers in the world.”

The company has long looked to push the security of its workplace products, noticeably through its big-budget "The Wolf" video series, which starred Christian Slater as a Mr Robot-esque figure highlighting the risks facing today's top businesses.
